Childcare benefit no longer depends on hours worked

This information is provided by:Netherlands Enterprise Agency, RVONetherlands Enterprise Agency, RVONederlandse versieEffective date: 1 January 2023

What has changed?

Do you have young children? The amount of childcare benefit no longer depends on the number of hours worked.

Prior to 1 January 2023, the amount of childcare benefit you received depended (among other things) on the hours spent on work or business by the parent who worked the least number of hours. For many parents this complicated the application. Especially for parents working irregular hours, such as for instance entrepreneurs, it was hard to estimate the number of hours they work per month. This could lead to significant amounts they needed to repay. It could also influence labour participation. The government has now removed this barrier, so it is easier for parents with young children to work.

For whom?

  • entrepreneurs with young children

When?

The Decree on childcare benefit entered into effect on 1 January 2023.
