Effective date: not yet known

What changes?

Are you a manufacturer or importer in the textile industry? You will be partly responsible for the waste caused by the products you handle. This is called producer responsibility.

Producer responsibility has the following aims:

  • design and produce products in a sustainable way
  • collect and recycle more discarded products

Producer responsibility

The rules for producer responsibility already apply to importers and manufacturers of cars, batteries and electronic appliances. During the spring of 2021, the government will propose an extended producer responsibility for the textile sector. At the moment, over 55% of textile waste ends up in landfill.

For whom?

  • enterpreneurs who produce or import textile

It is not yet known when this change in law will come into effect. A proposal is expected in the spring of 2021.

Please note: The effective date of this measure is not yet final. Entry into force is subject to its passing through the upper and lower houses of parliament or proclamation of the Order in Council (Algemene Maatregel van Bestuur, AMvB) or ministerial decree and publication in the Staatsblad or Staatscourant (in Dutch).
