Hourly minimum wage will be the same for everyone

Nederlandse versie
Effective date: 1 January 2024

What changes?

Do you pay employees the minimum wage? There will be a statutory minimum hourly wage. Currently the minimum wage is determined per month. Because of this someone who works 40 hours per week has a lower hourly minimum wage than someone working 36 hours per week. This will change with the implementation of the statutory minimum hourly wage. As a result the minimum hourly wage is the same, despite the length of the working week.

The implementation of the hourly minimum wage ensures that working more hours always leads to a higher income.

For whom?

  • entrepreneurs with staff

When

This change in the Minimum wage and minimum holiday allowance act (Wet minimumloon en minimumvakantiebijslag, Wml) is expected to enter into effect on 1 January 2024.

Please note: The effective date of this measure is not yet final. Entry into force is subject to its passing through the upper and lower houses of parliament or proclamation of the Order in Council (Algemene Maatregel van Bestuur, AMvB) or ministerial decree and publication in the Staatsblad or Staatscourant (Government Gazette, in Dutch).
