What has changed?

Do you work in (road) transport? All newly registered trucks must be fitted with a smart tachograph type 2 (SMT2).

Replace existing tachographs

In trucks involved in international transport the existing tachograph must be replaced by an SMT2. This is a phased process:

  • trucks with an analogue or digital tachograph should have an SMT2 no later than 31 December 2024
  • trucks that have a smart tachograph type 1, should be fitted with an SMT2 by 19 August 2025

Extra features

In addition to monitoring driving and rest times, the SMT2 will be used to enforce cabotage and secondment rules. The new smart tachograph registers border crossings and loading and unloading.

For whom?

  • transport companies
  • truck drivers

When?

This change is the result of the European 'mobility package'. IT has entered into force on 21 August 2023.

Please note: due to a shortage of SMT2 type tachographs, new trucks were allowed to be fit with SMT1 type tachographs until 31 December 2023. These trucks must be retrofit with SMT2 type tachographs by 19 August 2025.
