This change in law took effect on: 1 July 2025

What changed?

Do you or your employee only have B driving licence (regular driving licence)? If you have had your regular driving licence for at least 2 years, you are allowed to drive heavier vehicles. This only applies to sustainable vehicles powered alternatively. In general this will be an electric vehicle. The vehicle’s maximum permitted mass can be no more than 4,250 kilograms and it is not allowed to use the vehicle in combination with a trailer.

This change in law allows more people to drive an electric vehicle, which contributes to sustainability.

For whom?

  • Entrepreneurs who own an alternatively powered vehicle with a maximum permitted mass between 3,501 and 4,250 kilograms. Or who want to buy a rent such a vehicle.

When?

This change in the Driving Licences Regulations (Reglement rijbewijzen) entered into force on 1 July 2025.

Do you think government rules are unclear?

Do the rules create unnecessary administrative burdens? Or do you know how the rules could make doing business easier? You can report this (anonymously) to the Regulatory Reporting Centre (Meldpunt regelgeving).
