Every dog needs a pet passport

What changes?
Every dog in the Netherlands should have a European pet passport. The passport should state for instance:
- where the dog is from
- who bred it
- which vaccinations it has had
Only vets can issue dog passports. The passport will be linked to the dog’s registration. Vets and authorised microchipping professionals will be responsible for the correct birth registration of dogs instead of breeders.

When?
The change is law is expected to come into effect on 1 July 2021.
Please note: The effective date of this measure is not yet final. Entry into force is subject to its passing through the upper and lower houses of parliament or proclamation of the Order in Council (Algemene Maatregel van Bestuur, AMvB) or ministerial decree and publication in an official State publication (Staatsblad or the Staatscourant, in Dutch).
