Smart Tachograph Type 2 mandatory for vehicles from 2,500 kg
What will change?Â
Do you have a company vehicle with a maximum authorised weight (MAM) of 2,500 kg or more? And do you use this vehicle for international transport or cabotage? Then your vehicle must be fitted with a Smart Tachograph Type 2 (SMT2) from 1 July 2026.Â
At the moment this only applies to vehicles with a maximum authorised weight of 3,500 kg or more.Â
Exemption for own transportÂ
Is transporting goods not your main activity? For example, you are a handyman and use the vehicle to get to your customers with your materials (own transport)? Then you are not required to fit your company vehicle with a SMT2.Â
For whom?Â
- transport companies
- truck driversÂ
What should you do?
- Make sure to apply for the necessary tachograph cards (company card and driver’s card, in Dutch) in time.
- Ensure you and your drivers know all they need to know about using the tachograph and about the European driving times and rest periods.Â
When?Â
This change is the result of the European Mobility Package and will come into force on 1 July 2026.
