BSO bus may carry a maximum of 8 children
What has changed?
Are you the owner of a childcare organisation and do you use BSO buses? From 1 January 2026 new rules apply to transporting children and as a result you can transport no more than 8 children in 1 BSO bus.
A BSO bus is an electric vehicle for out-of-school care (buitenschoolse opvang, BSO) in which children can be transported. It is officially classified as a special motorised vehicle (bijzondere bromfiets, in Dutch).
The new rule applies to all BSO buses used to transport children to and from out-of-school care (BSO). The measure is intended to improve the safety of the children during after-school transport.
What does this mean for you?
- You can take no more than 8 children per trip in the BSO bus.
- Did you usually transport more than 8 children per trip? You will have to adjust your planning.
- You may need to make more trips or you may need more BSO buses.
For whom?
- childcare organisations using BSO buses
- owners of out-of-school care
- entrepreneurs who arrange transport for out-of-school care providers
- manufacturers and importers of special motorised vehicles
