Online shops must have a cancellation button
What changes?
Do you have an online shop, or do you sell services online? From 19 June 2026 you must have an obvious cancellation button on your website. With such a button customers can quickly and easily cancel their purchase or service within the statutory 14 day cooling-off period.
Currently customers need to complete a form or contact customer service to exercise their right of withdrawal (cancelling the order). This will change. Soon 1 click on the button will be enough.
The button must have a clear text, for example ‘hier de overeenkomst ontbinden’ (terminate the agreement here). The button does not replace the standard withdrawal form. It is an additional, easier option for your customers.
How does it work?
After the customer has clicked on the button, 2 more steps follow:
- The customer indicates that they want to cancel the purchase or service.
- You send the customer a message confirming the cancellation. After the customer’s confirmation, the return period starts.
For whom?
- online shops selling goods to consumers
- providers of services, such as online courses or coaching programmes
- online sellers on social media
When?
It is expected you must have implemented a cancellation button on your online shop by 19 June 2026.
Please note: The effective date of this measure is not yet final. Entry into force is subject to its passing through the Lower and Upper Houses (Tweede en Eerste Kamer) of parliament. After publication in the Staatsblad or Staatscourant (Government Gazette, in Dutch) the law can take effect.
