Online shops must have a cancellation button

This change in law took effect on: 19 June 2026

What has changed?

Do you have an online shop, or do you sell services online? Since 19 June 2026 you must have an obvious cancellation button on your website. With such a button customers can quickly and easily cancel their purchase or service within the statutory 14 day cooling-off period.

Before the cancellation button became mandatory, customers needed to complete a form or contact customer service to exercise their right of withdrawal (cancelling the order). This has changed. Now 1 click on the button is enough.

The button must have a clear text, for example ‘hier de overeenkomst ontbinden’ (terminate the agreement here). The button does not replace the standard withdrawal form. It is an additional, easier option for your customers.

How does it work?

After the customer has clicked on the button, 2 more steps follow:

  • The customer indicates that they want to cancel the purchase or service.
  • You send the customer a message confirming the cancellation. After the customer’s confirmation, the return period starts.

For whom?

  • online shops selling goods to consumers
  • providers of services, such as online courses or coaching programmes
  • online sellers on social media

When?

You must have implemented a cancellation button on your online shop since 19 June 2026.
