ATA carnet for temporary export
Are you temporarily leaving the European Union with goods? For example, for an exhibition or a sports event. With an ATA carnet, you will not have to pay import duties or VAT. And you can arrange everything with customs administrations using a single document.
When do you use an ATA carnet?
You can use an ATA carnet when you are temporarily taking goods to a country outside the EU. This applies to many countries outside the EU (in Dutch). The conditions may vary from country to country.
You can use an ATA carnet for the temporary export of, for example:
- samples and advertising material;
- exhibition material;
- tools for performing maintenance, repairs and service work;
- photographic, video and film material;
- musical instruments;
- stage and theatre props;
- materials for sporting events
Applying for an ATA carnet
You can apply for an ATA carnet online via the Netherlands Chmaber of Commerce, KVK. Once you have submitted your application, you will receive the ATA carnet by registered post within 3 to 5 working days.
How does an ATA carnet work?
Suppose you want to visit a trade fair in Switzerland to promote your machines to the Swiss market. You will not be selling them. Because your machines are only in Switzerland temporarily, you do not have to pay any import duties and VAT if you have an ATA carnet.
Return after use
After use you return the entire paper ATA carnet, including all vouchers and any unused inserts, to the KVK. Send it by registered post to: KVK, Carnets Department, PO Box 2852, 1000 CW Amsterdam.
Advantage of an ATA carnet
With an ATA carnet:
- you do not pay VAT, import duties, or security deposits
- you use a single document for multiple Customs Administrations
- you can settle customs matters more quickly and easily
What does an ATA carnet cost?
You pay a fixed fee for an ATA carnet. You can find the costs in the KVK's overview of product tarrifs. You also pay a premium that is based on the value of your goods.
How long is an ATA carnet valid for?
An ATA carnet is valid for up to one year. Within that period, you can usually use it several times for the import, export, and transit of the same goods. In some countries, the validity period is less than one year. Once the ATA carnet has expired, please return it to KVK by registered post.
When can you not use an ATA carnet?
There are times when you cannot use an ATA carnet. For example, if a country did not join the ATA Convention. In that case, you must make a declaration for temporary importation to the customs administration abroad. You will often be required to pay a security deposit.
