Child first aid certificate in childcare

Do you run a childcare facility? You must make sure that enough adults with a dedicated first aid certificate are present during opening hours. There must be at least:

  • 1 adult at each location.
  • 2 adults at each location if the day care and out-of-school care (BSO) groups are not combined.

The adult with a dedicated child first aid certificate does not have to be a member of your pedagogical staff. However, they must be able to attend an incident quickly.

List of first aid certificates

The first aid certificate must be included in the government list of certificates suitable for administering first aid to children (in Dutch). A first aid certificate specifically for children can also be part of a company emergency response course (BHV). The certificate is valid for 2 years. It must be renewed with a refresher course before it expires.

The municipal health service (GGD) checks if you have the required number of adults with an eligible and valid certificate at your location.
