Province Limburg: Working with fauna management
The management of wildlife is in many cases entrusted to what are called wildlife management units. The management of wildlife is carried out in accordance with the wildlife management plan. It includes information on existing and desired animal species. It also includes information on damage that has occurred in the past and damage that is expected in the future. The province approves a wildlife management plan.
Support on applying for an exemptionTo be eligible for an exemption, your application must meet the following conditions in accordance with the Wet natuurbescherming (Nature Conservation Act):
a. there is no other satisfactory solution, in other words you cannot prevent effects by adopting a different solution or changing your activity;
b. the activity is taking place in the context of a statutory interest, for example serious harm to crops, public safety or public health;
c. the measures will not lead to a worsening of the conservation status of the species concerned, nor will they jeopardise efforts to maintain the populations of the species in question at a favourable conservation status in their natural range.
The sustainable management of populations of wildlife, the control of damage-causing animals by land users and the practice of hunting are carried out in accordance with a fauna management plan approved by the Provincial Executive.
If the Faunabeheereenheid (Fauna Management Unit) does not have an exemption for a certain species and this species is causing damage to agricultural crops, an application for such an exemption can be made outside of the fauna management plan via the Limburg Fauna Management Unit (info@fbelimburg.nl), which will pass this on to the Province of Limburg via its function as a one-stop shop.
If you wish to be eligible for compensation from the Faunafonds (Fauna Fund), you must first have applied for an exemption.
The Province of Limburg will only decide not to grant your application if it relates to stock doves or mute swans, as it believes there are other satisfactory solutions for combating these species.
Not applicable.
The Province has 13 weeks to make a decision regarding a fauna management exemption application. This period can be extended once by 7 weeks, resulting in a decision deadline of 20 weeks.
Have you applied for an exemption? If you do not agree with our decision on your application, you can object to this. Do this within 6 weeks.
