Are you an entrepreneur and is your income substantially lower as a result of the corona crisis? And do you have difficulty paying essential costs? You may be eligible for the Temporary Support for Essential Costs scheme (Tijdelijke Ondersteuning Noodzakelijke Kosten, TONK) to help you pay for essential costs of living such as costs for housing. This scheme is based on the municipal social assistance benefit. This means it may be also be used in other exceptional circumstances.

Please note: Have you received financial support to get through the corona crisis? Many government support schemes ended on 1 October 2021. Several schemes require that you repay (part of) the financial support. Read more about repaying financial support.

What is TONK?

TONK is meant to help you pay for housing costs such as:

  • rent or mortgage payments
  • utilities (electricity, water, gas)
  • service charges
  • municipal taxes

TONK will not be counted towards your taxable profit. This means it will be exempt from income tax (inkomstenbelasting) or corporate income tax (vennootschapsbelasting).

How to apply?

You could apply for TONK to your municipality until 30 September 2021. The deadline for application for TONK may differ per municipality. Please check your municipality's website (in Dutch) for more information.
