This information is provided by

Netherlands Enterprise Agency, RVO

Effective date: 1 January 2022

What changes?

From 1 January 2022, fuel suppliers for inland vessels must blend a specific percentage of sustainable biofuel. Adding biofuel lowers the carbon emission.

The Green Deal on Maritime and Inland Shipping and Ports includes the agreement that emissions through inland navigation must come down. Carbon emissions due to inland navigation must be 40% to 50% lower than in 2015.

The obligation to blend biofuel is already in place for road freight.

For whom?

  • fuel providers for inland navigation/shipping

When?

It is expected this change in regulation will enter into force on 1 January 2022.

Please note: The effective date of this measure is not yet final. Entry into force is subject to its passing through the upper and lower houses of parliament or proclamation of the Order in Council (Algemene Maatregel van Bestuur, AMvB) or ministerial decree and publication in the Staatsblad or Staatscourant (Government Gazette, in Dutch).
