Plain packaging for cigarettes and rolling tobacco

This information is provided by

Netherlands Enterprise Agency, RVO

Effective date: 1 October 2020

What changes?

Do you sell cigarettes? You may only sell smoking products in neutral (plain) packages. Plain packaging in this case means leaving off brand specific logo’s, colours and typefaces. Only the brand name, brand variety, manufacturer's details and barcode may be printed on the packet. This information must meet set standards on colouring, typeface and font size. Every package must feature the mandatory health warnings.

This rule will apply for cigarettes and cut tobacco (rolling tobacco) fom 1 October 2020. For other products such as cigars and electronic cigarettes plain packaging will be required from 1 January 2022.

For whom?

  • Producers and importers of cigarettes and rolling tobacco
  • Owners and employees of shops selling cigarettes and rolling tobacco

When?

This change will be effective from 1 October 2020.
