Reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel extended until 2028

The government has proposed a change in rules. The proposal will be debated in the Lower and Upper Houses of Parliament. The proposal may therefore still change, but it can be helpful to be aware of this in advance.

What changes?Â
The government wants to extend the reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by 1 year, until 1 January 2028. This means the excise duty will be €0.85 per litre of petrol and €0.55 per litre of diesel. From 2028, the reduction will be lower.Â
The reduced excise duty on LPG will not be extended.Â
The government wants to keep driving affordable for everyone. That is why it wants to extend the reduced excise duty.Â
When?Â
The change in law is expected to take effect on 1 January 2027.
