Packaging requirements for transport

Will you be transporting products to other countries? The packaging that keeps your products safe during shipping has to meet many requirements. And the rules and requirements can differ per country.

Use the right packaging

Requirements for transport packaging and packing materials vary from country to country. For example, more and more countries are requiring that wooden pallets be treated according to the ISPM 15 method. This kills fungi and pests.

Carriers are usually liable for damage to goods during transport. So, they require you to package the products properly. Consult with the carrier or forwarder in advance about the best packaging. Also ask whether the carrier has a maximum size or weight per pallet, for example.

Prevent damage with symbols on packaging materials

Are your goods vulnerable to damage? If so, apply international symbols to the packaging. For example, to indicate that the parcel must be transported or stored in a specific manner. Contact the carrier to make arrangements for this.

Rules for packaging waste and waste management fee

European laws are in place to reduce packaging waste. Read more about the requirements in the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (pdf).

Are you an importer? And do you have more than 50,000 kilos of packaging waste per year? If so, you must pay a waste management fee in the Netherlands.

Do you sell products in another EU country? For example via an online shop? Then you are sometimes responsible for packaging waste in the country of destination.

Use sustainable packaging

Do you want to do business more sustainably? Then use environmentally friendly packaging. Such as:

  • shipping packaging made from recycled material
  • filling material made from recycled material
  • biodegradable cushioning material
  • FSC or PEFC certified paper or cardboard shipping packaging
  • packaging that can be opened and closed several times
