If you wish to organise an event, you must notify the municipality and, in some cases, apply for a permit. You can check this online using the permit check (vergunningscheck).

Exemptions

For some small(er) events, no permit is needed and only general regulations apply.

These exemptions apply to:

  • occasional sporting events up to max. 100 visitors/competitors,
  • musical tours, serenades and parades up to max. 100 participants,
  • street music and street theatre,
  • celebrations in the neighbourhood, in the street, with neighbours up to max. 100 persons,
  • walking tours and bike trips up to max. 100 participants,
  • one-day bazaars and jumble sales up to max. 100 visitors.

The following general regulations – where applicable – apply to these small(er) events:

  • the organization will provide adequate guidance and supervision during the event
  • the passage of any emergency traffic may not be obstructed in any way
  • the organizer must take all reasonably possible measures to ensure the safety of the public and the participant
  • when using sound equipment, the noise level at the facade of surrounding residences may not exceed 55 dB(A)
  • all instructions and/or orders of the police and/or municipal supervisors must be followed strictly and immediately
  • the organizer must take all reasonably possible measures to prevent damage to third parties or the municipality
  • any damage to municipal property will be at the expense of the organizer

For all other events, you must apply for a permit.

The larger the event, the earlier you must submit the application. For smaller events (up to 1000 visitors and/or participants) the deadline is 8 weeks and for larger events 12 to 16 weeks.

You pay a fee for this service.

Depending on the size of the event, you will be notified within 6 to 8 weeks. For large events, the processing time limit will be somewhat longer.

In principle, all permit applications for events are published. That offers third parties such as local residents the opportunity to express their views on the permit application. As a rule, a period of 2 weeks is used for this.

The submitted views are included in the decision on the permit application.

Parties concerned may thereupon object to the granted permit. This is subject to a period of 6 weeks after publication of the decision.

The objection is handled by the independent Objections Committee. This Committee makes a recommendation to the competent administrative body (the mayor), which must then make a decision on the objection.
