If you mass produce vehicles, vehicle systems or vehicle parts or you are an authorised importer who intends to sell these products in the Netherlands, you need to obtain a type approval (typegoedkeuring, TGK) from the Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW). Type approval confirms that an initial production model of a type of vehicle or vehicle part meets the set requirements. Without it, a vehicle will not be given a registration and may not be driven on public roads.
European type approval (ETG)
A European type approval (ETG) is valid in all EU Member States. A vehicle registration certificate can be requested for vehicles with an ETG in every EU Member State.
Please note: Vehicles or vehicle parts that have not been produced in series must also be inspected before they are admitted to the Dutch roads. This individual inspection is carried out by the RDW as well.
On 31 January 2020 the UK has left the European Union, which marks the start of the transition period until 31 December 2020. During this transition period, the UK is no longer a member of the EU, but will still be subject to EU regulations. If you export vehicles, e11 type approvals may then no longer be valid in the EU. Likewise EU type approvals may not be automatically recognised in the UK. UNECE type approvals are not affected. For more information on UK type approval to trade in the UK after Brexit, you can check the Vehicle Certification Agency website.
