Vehicle type approval and vehicle parts

This information is provided by

Netherlands Enterprise Agency, RVO

If you mass produce vehicles, vehicle systems or vehicle parts or you are an authorised importer who intends to sell these products in the Netherlands, you need to obtain a type approval (typegoedkeuring, TGK) from the Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW). Type approval confirms that an initial production model of a type of vehicle or vehicle part meets the set requirements. Without it, a vehicle will not be given a registration and may not be driven on public roads.

European type approval (ETG)

A European type approval (ETG) is valid in all EU Member States. A vehicle registration certificate can be requested for vehicles with an ETG in every EU Member State.

Please note: Vehicles or vehicle parts that have not been produced in series must also be inspected before they are admitted to the Dutch roads. This individual inspection is carried out by the RDW as well.

UK (e11) type approvals after Brexit

The EU no longer recognises E11 type approvals after Brexit. Some EU type approvals are recognised in the UK. UNECE type approvals are still valid. The Vehicle Certification Agency website has more information on type approvals.
