Registering a vehicle in a customer's name
Do you sell a new vehicle or a vehicle from your company’s stock? You must put the registration in the new owner’s name (transfer). You can do this yourself, if your company is authorised to do so.
Changing a vehicle registration yourself
Do you want to be able to transfer a registration certificate online yourself? You can do this if your company is authorised. For this, you have to apply for recognition (erkenning Tenaamstellen voertuigen bedrijfsvoorraad of importeursvoorraad, TVBI, in Dutch) to the Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW, in Dutch).
To apply for recognition, you must:
- meet the conditions for the Basic recognition (Basiserkenning, in Dutch). For this, your company must be registered with the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce (KVK) and you have to submit a valid certificate of conduct (VOG).
- Your KVK registration must state that you conduct commercial activities with or involving vehicles.
- You must have a lockable facility, such as a cupboard or a safe that can be locked.
In order to apply, you first need an acknowledgement vehicles in company stock. You can also apply for the TVBI recognition and acknowledgement of vehicles in stock at the same time.
Digital authorisation
To transfer a vehicle, the new owner must first sign a digital (online) authorisation. You need to print the digital client authorisation form (digitale machtiging, in Dutch) and let the new owner sign it. After that, you can transfer the vehicle in the name of the buyer. You must keep this signed authorisation for at least 1 year and destroy it after 2 years at the latest. Once the RDW approves the transfer, they will send the vehicle registration card (kentekencard) to the new owner.
Have a vehicle registration changed
You can have a registration changed at the registration counter of the following locations:
- PostNL post offices (in Dutch)
Accelerated issue of vehicle registration certificates
Do you import or manufacture vehicles and do you want to apply online for vehicle registration certificates for cars, motorcycles or trailers (new, unused vehicles with type approval)? If you wish to do so without the need to have them inspected first, you can use the accelerated issue authorisation (Versnelde Inschrijving, VI). In order to obtain this authorisation (in Dutch), you need a company supply stock acknowledgement from RDW and you must be registered with a provider. You can also apply for both the VI and the acknowledgement at the same time.
