Will you be transporting products? The packaging that keeps your products safe during shipping has to tick lots of boxes. Besides, the rules and requirements can even differ per country.

Use the right packaging

Requirements for transport packaging and packing materials vary from country to country. Carriers are usually liable for damage to goods during transport, so they demand proper packaging. If you want to be sure, reach out to the carrier or shipper in advance.

Prevent damage with symbols on packaging materials

Are your goods vulnerable to damage? If so, apply international symbols to the packaging. For example, to indicate that the parcel must be transported or stored in a specific manner. Contact the carrier to make arrangements for this.

Packaging waste and waste management fee

European laws are in place to reduce packaging waste. Read more about the requirements in the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (pdf).

Are you an importer? And do you have more than 50,000 kilos of packaging waste per year? If so, you must pay a waste management fee in the Netherlands.

Do you sell products in another EU country? For example via a web shop? Then you are sometimes responsible for packaging waste in the country of destination.

Sustainable packaging

Do you want to do business more sustainably? Then use environmentally friendly packaging. Such as:

  • shipping packaging made from recycled material
  • filling material made from recycled material
  • biodegradable cushioning material
  • FSC or PEFC certified paper or cardboard shipping packaging
  • packaging that can be opened and closed several times
